Cathy’s guest is the author of the book Women Who Think Too Much - How to Break Free of Overthinking and Reclaim Your Life. Dr. Susan Nolen-Hoeksema is on the faculty in the psychology dept. at Yale. She says that women are more likely than men to fall into overthinking and remain stuck there. Even minor events can send many into distress. For example, the boss makes a sarcastic remark to you and you spend days worrying about what he or she meant; a friend makes a comment about your weight and you get mired in thoughts about how you look and how insensitive the friend is; your spouse doesn’t kiss you goodnight enthusiastically so you’re up all night wondering what this means for your marriage.

Compassion, Forgiveness & Acts of Kindness

We’ll talk about the Cameron Effect 2012, encouraging thoughts of compassion and forgiveness through 7 special acts of kindness between now and Dec. 7th. This movement was started after an accident involving a drunk driver took the life of Cameron Freeman of Lincoln two years ago, right before his 22nd birthday, which was December 7th. Shelley and Paul Freeman will join us in studio to talk about how thoughts of anger and resentment turned to compassion and forgiveness. We’ll also hear from Detective Jay Armbrister from Kansas, who investigated the accident, and who was so moved by this story that he now does public speaking about it – and Nick Hernandez of Positivity Matters joins us as well to talk about how he has partnered with the Freemans in their mission. Depression

Our subject is depression and in the first half, Cathy visits with Suzy Favor Hamilton, three time Olympian who is participating Sunday in the Run to Overcome, in memory of critical care nurse Adam Zetterman who suffered from severe depression and took his life in 2010.  Suzy herself has dealt with depression in the past – and her brother also took his life after experiencing deep depression. Over Thinking

Cathy’s guest is the author of the book Women Who Think Too Much - How to Break Free of Overthinking and Reclaim Your Life. Dr. Susan Nolen-Hoeksema is on the faculty in the psychology dept. at Yale. She says that women are more likely than men to fall into overthinking and remain stuck there. Even minor events can send many into distress. For example, the boss makes a sarcastic remark to you and you spend days worrying about what he or she meant; a friend makes a comment about your weight and you get mired in thoughts about how you look and how insensitive the friend is; your spouse doesn’t kiss you goodnight enthusiastically so you’re up all night wondering what this means for your marriage.

Plane Crash Survivor

Cathy’s guest is Mercedes Ramirez Johnson, who shares her personal story of surviving what was considered an “unsurvivable” plane crash in Columbia back in 1995 on her 21st birthday. She was one of only four who survived and 160 people lost their lives, including Mercedes’ parents. She has been featured on ABC’s show Revolution and she talks about that experience as well. Plane Crash Survivor Story

Cathy’s guest is Mercedes Ramirez Johnson, who shares her personal story of surviving what was considered an “unsurvivable” plane crash in Columbia back in 1995 on her 21st birthday. She was one of only four who survived and 160 people lost their lives, including Mercedes’ parents. She has just been featured on ABC’s new show Revolution and we’ll talk about that experience as well. Overthinking
Wednesday, Jan. 19th...Cathy's guest is the author of the book Women Who Think Too Much. Dr. Susan Nolen-Hoeksema is on the faculty in the psychology dept. at Yale. She says that women are more likely than men to fall into overthinking and remain stuck there. Even minor events can send many into distress. For example, the boss makes a sarcastic remark to you and you spend days worrying about what he or she meant; a friend makes a comment about your weight and you get mired in thoughts about how you look and how insensitive the friend is; your spouse doesn't kiss you goodnight enthusiastically so you're up all night wondering what this means for your marriage. We'll find out how to escape from overthinking!

Quitting Smoking
Dr. Scott Shurmur, Associate Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at UNMC will be Cathy's guest to discuss smoking cessation. For the 18.4 percent of Nebraska residents who smoke, Dr. Shurmur shares ideas to create a plan to quit. Each year there are approximately 2,300 smoking-attributed deaths in Nebraska, and an estimated 280 non-smoking Nebraska residents die prematurely from secondhand smoke.
